The Various Causes of Yeast Infections

Candida albicans is the primary cause of yeast infection in most women. It is a yeast fungus which exists naturally in most parts of the human body. However, when the body’s natural balance is disrupted, Candida albicans multiplies rapidly causing yeast infections known as candidiasis.

There are many other causes of yeast infections. One of the major factors causing candidiasis is a compromised immune system. Lowered immune system allows the yeast fungus to multiply rapidly. This can occur when a person does not get enough sleep and rest and yeast infections can also recur due to stress.

Secondly, hormonal changes have also been associated with yeast infections. This can happen during menstruation or pregnancy. Pregnancy and use of birth control pills can also be major causes. In fact, women can experience recurrent yeast infections when they are pregnant.

Candidiasis is not regarded as a sexually transmitted disease but in certain cases it can be transmitted from one partner to another. Usually men can contract yeast infections while having unprotected sex with their partner who is already suffering from yeast infection. The situation can become worse while having sex without enough lubrication.

Use of antibiotics is also regarded as a major contributor of yeast infections. Prolonged use of antibiotics is likely to result in candidiasis and such kind of infections cannot be prevented. However, there are many treatment methods and remedies available to cure the disease.

The yeast fungus likes to thrive in sugar rich environments. These kinds of environments are provided in diabetic people. They tend to have elevated sugar levels which provide a breeding ground for Candida to multiply extensively and cause yeast infections.

Other factors which can cause candidiasis in women include douches, feminine sprays and scented hygiene products. Tight fitting clothing can also be regarded as a cause. They create warm and moist environments for yeast fungus to thrive and multiply.

Preventing yeast infections is a much better option then curing them. Therefore, it is important for individuals to understand the causes of such infections so that they can avoid them from happening, rather then struggling to get rid of the infection when it has already affected.
